What matters for plumbers

01

Water first, paperwork later

Callers with a burst pipe need one instruction before anything else: turn off the main water valve. Put it in the first ten seconds, before the request for name and address.

02

Say what counts as an emergency

Burst pipes, sewage backing up, no water at all. If the greeting names these, routine calls stop pressing the emergency option, and your on-call plumber sleeps when it is quiet.

03

Freeze season and fall rush

In much of the US, the first hard freeze brings frozen and split pipes in one night. Record a winter version in fall, with a realistic callback time for non-urgent jobs.

04

Ask for the address

A street address and a short description let the dispatcher plan the route and the parts before calling back. One question saves a second call.

Questions

Should a plumbing greeting tell callers to shut off the water?

Yes, if you offer emergency service. It is the single most useful sentence for a caller with a leak, and it protects their home while they wait for your call.

Should we mention emergency rates in the greeting?

Only if you are sure the wording is current. If your after-hours rates change, say “after-hours rates apply” and explain the details on the callback.

How long should a plumbing voicemail be?

15 to 25 seconds. If there is an emergency option, it comes first, then the request for name, address and problem.
