While the caller waits

On-hold messages for UK businesses

An on-hold message tells the caller they have not been forgotten, and it can save your team a question or two. Keep each message short: it plays on a loop, and the same long sentence heard three times grates.

Thanks for holding. You're through to Fenwick and Daly, and the next free member of our team will pick up. If you're calling about a delivery, you can track it at any time with your order number and postcode. Please don't hang up, or you'll lose your place in the queue.

How a hold loop works

01

Short pieces

Two or three messages of ten to fifteen seconds each, separated by music. That feels livelier than one long block.

02

Music below the voice

In our mix the music dips under every spoken word and comes back up in between, so nothing has to compete.

03

Nothing that ages

Avoid “today” or a date unless you will swap the file. A Christmas message still running in February is noticed.

04

Test the loop

Hold on your own line for two full rounds. The join from end back to start should sound smooth.

Questions

How long should an on-hold message be?

Each spoken piece ten to fifteen seconds. The whole loop, music included, is usually between one and three minutes.

Is the music included?

Yes. Every track in our library is part of the price and comes with a usage right for your greeting. More on our music licensing page.

Can I upload the file as music on hold?

Most hosted phone systems accept your own music-on-hold file. Some, such as Gamma Horizon, ask for a WAV in a telephone codec; our audio converter produces it.
