Common errors and fixes

Greeting sounds distorted

The file was probably not converted to u-law at 8000 Hz. Convert it with the “WAV µ-law” setting and upload it again.

Callers who press nothing hear silence

Set the No Caller Input Handling Greeting in General Settings as well.

Built by phone-audio professionals

This generator comes out of more than 20 years in a recording studio. We built in what makes a greeting work on the phone: clear pronunciation, sensible pauses and music that never covers the voice. Questions? Andreas Brenner and Tim Stein will help you personally.

Questions

Which format does Vonage want?

Vonage lists these media encoding requirements for uploaded greetings and hold music: u-law, mono, 8000 Hz, 8 bit, 6 to 8 MB file size, .wav or .mp3 format. The “WAV µ-law” setting in our audio converter creates exactly this kind of file.

Can a virtual receptionist use text-to-speech instead?

Yes, Vonage offers a Text-to-Speech greeting mode. An uploaded file gives you a natural voice, music and one consistent sound for greeting, menu and hold.

Can I record a greeting by phone?

Yes. Vonage lets you enter a phone number or extension and calls it so you can record. An uploaded file sounds cleaner than a handset recording.

Where are the official Vonage instructions?

In the Vonage Business support article Record or Upload Greetings.
