Phone greetings for pubs and restaurants

Between pulling pints and running plates, the phone gets left to ring. A booking voicemail that asks for name, number, date and party size gives you everything you need to confirm the table later.

Bookings, Sunday lunch, allergies

Thank you for calling the Tolhurst Arms. We're busy serving at the moment. To book a table, leave your name, your number, the date and how many of you there'll be. Sunday lunch is served from twelve until four and books up early. If anyone in your party has a food allergy, please mention it in your message so the kitchen can plan ahead.

Large groups

Parties of eight or more

For groups of eight or more, please email [email address] with your date and numbers. We'll send you our group menu and ask for a deposit to secure the booking.

Closed

Kitchen hours

[Restaurant name] is closed right now, between services. The kitchen is open Tuesday to Saturday, 12:00 to 14:30 and 17:30 to 21:30, and Sundays 12:00 to 16:00.

Walk-ins

No bookings for small tables

We keep most tables for walk-ins, so there's no need to book for two or three. For larger groups, leave a message and we'll call you back.

Seasonal

Christmas bookings

Christmas party bookings are open. Ask for our festive menu by email at [email address], or leave a message with your preferred date.

What is different for pubs and restaurants

Allergies start at the booking

The Food Standards Agency publishes guidance for food businesses on providing allergen information. Inviting guests to mention allergies when they book gives the kitchen time to prepare and the front of house a note on the reservation.

Sunday lunch is its own service

In many pubs, Sunday lunch is the busiest sitting of the week and books up days ahead. Its hours belong in the greeting, separate from the weekday kitchen times.

From the studio

01

Lively but clear

A relaxed, friendly voice with a light jazz or guitar track suits most pubs. Keep the music well under the booking instruction.

02

Ask for party size last

Name, number, date, then numbers: callers say them in that order naturally.

Questions

Should the greeting list the allergens?

No. The greeting should invite guests to tell you about allergies. Allergen information itself belongs on your menu and with your staff.
