Workshops and auto repairers

Phone greetings for mechanics

A workshop phone rings while everyone is under a bonnet. Most calls are about three things: booking a service, a roadworthy inspection, or whether the car is ready. A short menu handles all three.

Thanks for calling Pinnacle Auto Care. Our workshop is open Monday to Friday from half past seven until five, and on Saturday mornings. To book a service or a roadworthy inspection, press one. To check on a car that's already with us, press two. For anything else, please stay on the line.

Two state differences callers ask about

Roadworthy in Victoria

VicRoads says sellers should check whether they need a roadworthy certificate, which comes from a licensed vehicle tester and is valid for 30 days. Sellers often call at short notice, so say on the phone how quickly you can fit an inspection in.

Safety certificate in Queensland

In Queensland, only approved inspection stations issue safety certificates. For private sellers they are valid for two months or 2,000 km. If your workshop is an approved inspection station, say so in the greeting; if not, say where callers can go.

01

Ask for the rego

A rego number finds the job card faster than a name. Ask for it in every message.

02

Call it what your state calls it

“Roadworthy” in Victoria, “safety certificate” in Queensland. Use the word your customers use.

03

Text instead of call back

If you text customers when the car is ready, say so. Fewer people ring to ask.

Questions

Other states have different checks. What do I say?

Use the name and rules of the state you work in. If you are unsure, the state transport authority’s website names the inspection and who may carry it out.
