How to choose a voice for the phone

01

Test it on a handset

A voice that sounds rich on laptop speakers can turn thin on a mobile. Play the preview through your phone before you decide.

02

Match the pace to the job

A phone menu needs a steady, even pace so callers catch every number. A message on hold can be warmer and slower.

03

Female or male

There is no rule. Pick the voice that fits how your front desk sounds. If your team is mostly men, a male voice can feel more natural, and the other way round.

04

One voice per line

Keep the same voice on the menu, the on-hold message and the after-hours greeting. Callers notice when it changes halfway.

Other languages

Every voice also speaks other languages. That helps if many of your customers speak Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic or Italian at home. A short second sentence in their language often helps more than a full second greeting.

Questions

Can I hear my own script before I pay?

Yes. Paste it into the generator, switch between voices and play each one. Previews are free.

Do the voice names in the generator mean anything?

They only tell the voices apart. Choose by ear, not by name.
