How a greeting comes together
Wording
Three or four short sentences are plenty for voicemail. Our UK script library has more than thirty to start from.

Add a pause before the menu, respell a tricky surname, then play it again. Every round is free.

Writing for British callers

Times
A schedule written as 08:30–17:30 can sound clipped. Type it as you would say it: “from half past eight until half past five”.

Area codes
Give a number in the groups people expect, for instance “oh one one three” before a Leeds number, and leave it for the end of the message.

Place names
Towns such as Bicester or Alnwick trip up any voice. If it reads the letters, spell the name the way it is pronounced and listen again.

Is there a British voice that sounds like a receptionist rather than a newsreader?
Several. Play the same sentence with two or three of them and choose the one that suits your callers; our page on British English voices describes what to listen for.
How long should the greeting be?
For voicemail, around twenty seconds is enough for your name, the reason nobody answered and what the caller should do now. Menus and hold messages can run longer.
Do I need an account to hear a preview?
No. Anyone can listen. You sign in when you download the paid greeting.
What happens when our hours change?
Edit the wording and download again. Each downloaded version is charged as one greeting, so the old file stays yours as well.
