Change your Telstra MessageBank greeting

MessageBank greetings are recorded over the phone. Telstra’s help pages describe no file upload, so you play your finished greeting into the call. It takes about two minutes.

Telstra mobile: re-record the greeting

Call 101 from your Telstra mobile. New messages play first, then the main menu.

  2. Press 3

    Mailbox Setup.

  3. Press 1

    Greetings.

  4. Press 1 again

Re-record your personal greeting, then follow the voice prompts.

01

Visual voicemail

Telstra calls it MessageBank Plus. Turn it on by texting VVM ON to 144. On an iPhone you then choose a default greeting or record a custom one in the Phone app under Voicemail.

02

Apple Live Voicemail

Since iOS 18, iPhones use Live Voicemail by default. It plays the greeting from MessageBank’s visual voicemail, rings for 15 seconds, and keeps messages on the phone rather than on 101.

03

Ring time

Dial **61*101** followed by 15, 20, 25 or 30, finish with # and press Call. For 30 seconds that is **61*101**30#.

04

From overseas

Call +61101 to check messages while roaming. It uses your international roaming voice allowance.

Telstra home and business phone

Call 101 from the phone line MessageBank is connected to. The first time, you are guided through recording your personal greeting and choosing a PIN. If your line runs through a PABX or another carrier, Telstra gives 1800 135 102 instead.

Telstra Home Messages 101 is a different, basic service with standard messages. See Telstra Home Messages 101.

Playing the file into the call

Open the downloaded MP3 on your computer. When MessageBank asks for your greeting, hold the phone close to the speaker and press play. A quiet room and medium volume work best. The sound loses a little quality on the way through; a phone system with file upload keeps the original.

Questions

Can I upload an MP3 to MessageBank?

Telstra’s help pages for MessageBank describe recording by phone and in the iPhone app, not a file upload. Play the file into the call as described above.

Can the menu numbers change?

Yes. We follow Telstra’s help pages as of 31 October 2026. If the voice prompts say something different, follow the prompts.
